Does Hair Transplant Make Hair Thicker?

Hair transplant surgery definitely increases the hair density in the current problematical area, but does not make your non-planted hair thicken.

Many people are wondering whether the hair transplant procedure as the permanent solution to hair loss can make their hair thicker. In fact, there is no such surgery that makes all of the hair in your head thicker. Well, if the surgeons add more hair grafts in a denser pattern, the hair growth may look thicker. However, as the density is enhanced in the transplanted area, it has nothing to do with the other area of your head, it won’t make them thicker. Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP can generate a coarser hair but not the hair transplant.

Hair Transplant Make Hair Thicker

In the hair transplant, the surgeon moves the follicular units harvested from the donor area to the balding area. Each of follicular units may contain 1-4 hair strands. In FUT, the surgeon may less selectively harvest the hair follicles as they just strip out the hair follicles from the donor area. It means the surgeon may have hair follicle variant s which may contain 1, 2, 3, or 4 hairs. In the FUE, the surgeon has a greater chance to pick follicular units to contain 3-4 hair as they individually harvest the follicular units one by one. At this point, with the adequate hair donor, The FUE may result in a denser hair growth in the transplanted area.

Today, the surgeon may apply multiple follicular unit grafts to generate a thicker hair growth. At this procedure, the surgeon will transplant multiple 2-3 grafts contain several follicular units or more hairs. While the common follicular units contain 4 hairs at max, the surgeon applies 4-8 hairs per unit which will potentially double the density. This will also enhance the natural look as the units are independently growing without disturbing the blood flow of other grafts. As more hairs are transplanted in the progressing hair growth pattern, it can enhance more natural look than ordinary hair transplant can provide.

Does Hair Transplant Make Hair Thicker?

As you can see, the hair transplant can potentially thicken the hair growth in the transplanted area due to the special application of multiple hairs. However, since hair transplant only affects the transplanted area, it can’t promote a thicker hair growth in other areas. Besides, hair transplant doesn’t stop the baldness, medication or therapy are the common treatments used to slow down the hair loss progress. That’s why the hair transplant can be taken as the thinning is no longer progressive. Consult your doctor whether you’re eligible to take hair transplant with multiple follicular unit grafting.
